BEE- Lieve It! the Buzz about Pollen

Our little community here in Baja has recently been plagued with an invasion of bees and wasps. Everyone and their brother are calling and asking each other what can be done to rectify this “sticky” situation! But for me, it’s a sure sign that summer is here.

I enjoy seeing the bees buzz around my head and pollinating the flower buds. But if you’re one of those unfortunate people with an allergy I certainly understand how you might find them annoying! Just remember that we really do need these buzzing little creatures in our world!

Look at it this way; the sweet nectar they deliver is yet one more way of saying every thorn has its rose, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade, or better yet, every cloud has a silver lining!  You get the point: without bees in our world, life as we know it just wouldn’t be the same.

Bee pollen is one of earth’s true treasures.  Nutritionally speaking, I can’t think of many foods that are healthier for us.  Without trying to bore the heck out of you, let’s explore some of the amazing benefits of this super food!

  • Bee pollen is one of the most nutritionally complete natural substances found on mother earth. Its incredible nutritional and medicinal values have been praised for thousands of years. For starters, bee pollen contains close to 10 different naturally occurring enzymes. That’s 5 to 7 times the amount of amino acids found in beef, milk, eggs or cheese! If you know anything about enzymes (which can be bore-iiiiing!) you know that you couldn’t digest your food without them. (Ok, for you scientific minds and intellectuals out there, the enzymes I’m referring to are: amylase, catalase, cozymase, cytochrome, dehydrogenasae, diaphorase, diastase, lactic acids, pectase and phosphatase. Bee pollen contains an amazing amount of vitamins B, C and E, a wealth of minerals and hormones, powerful antioxidants including lycopene, selenium, and beta carotene, and several flavinoids. Now don’t tune out just yet because there is so much more to this wonder food!!)
  • Bee pollen is a completely natural product that is well tolerated by our bodies due to its purity. It is completely free of toxicity and harmful side effects. Bee pollen is often used by inactive elderly people to increase weight and energy levels. Its super energizing properties will benefit anyone with regular use.
  • In addition to all its nutritional benefits, bee pollen has some powerful properties that can actually fight and prevent disease! Most strains of bee pollen contain active antibiotic substances which can destroy harmful pathogenic bacteria upon impact.
  • Furthermore, certain strains of pollen have been proven to be effective anti-viral agents which play a role in the reduction and prevention of common viral infections such as influenza.

Now here’s one that appeals to the vanity in all of us: bee pollen contains fatty acids that make our skin suppler and combat some of the effects of aging.

Now who doesn’t appreciate that?

So I say, neighbors, rethink that annoying little buzz around your yard and forget about those pesky bee hives! Brake out the pollen and add it to your favorite smoothies, pudding and the like.

Get your beekeeper gear on and enjoy the little buzzers!

Make Life Delicious,

Chef Tina Jo
